In New Mexico, there are 16 national monument and historic parks. Roughly two years ago it became a must Southwest Adventures goal to visit each one. We are excited to announce that the task has finally been completed with a recent visit to the last but certainly not least Capulin Volcano National Monument.
Located in Northeast New Mexico, the Capulin Volcano National Monument sits in an ancient volcanic field that serves as a distinctive landscape that connects mountains, plains and sky views of the Raton-Clayton volcanic field.
There are six trails throughout the national monument, however one trail serves as a path for some of the most amazing views featured in the Southwest which is the allows visitors to wander around the rim of this ancient volcano.
The one-mile loop around the volcano’s rim is the crater rim trail. Climbing and descending along the path is moderately difficult.
Of the views, it is one of the only spots in the United States that visitors can see five states at once which include Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Texas and New Mexico.
